The New Frontier of School Safety: From Zero Tolerance to Restorative Practices

The landscape of school discipline is undergoing a significant transformation. Historically, schools have relied on a deterrence model of behavior management, often implementing zero tolerance policies as a means of ensuring school safety [1]. However, recent research and ongoing debates suggest that these punitive approaches may be counterproductive, leading to a "school-to-prison pipeline" rather than truly enhancing safety.


A growing body of research advocates for a shift towards restorative practices and culturally responsive teaching as a more effective alternative. These approaches focus on building relationships and repairing harm rather than simply punishing misbehavior [1]. By addressing the root causes of conflict and encouraging communication, restorative practices create a more positive and supportive school culture.


In this context, the role of school security is being re-evaluated. While school resource officers (SROs) are a common feature in many schools, particularly in states like Idaho where their training is now mandated, their purpose is not to act as enforcers of zero-tolerance policies [2]. Instead, their role is shifting to be part of a broader, more integrated approach to school safety that prioritizes prevention and early intervention.


A study in a middle school with a diverse student population, for example, explores the impact of a program on closing the social-emotional gap [3]. This type of research aligns with a growing understanding that addressing students' underlying emotional and social needs is a proactive way to prevent behaviors that compromise safety.
