The Cost of School Safety

pie chart of school safety costs

The financial and emotional repercussions of crime within schools are substantial, extending beyond immediate costs to victims. According to a recent analysis, the annual direct cost of school crime to victims in the United States surpasses $600 million, accumulating to over $13 billion in the past two decades. For students alone, these direct costs approach $400 million each year. Beyond these immediate financial burdens, school crime casts a long shadow over the learning environment, negatively affecting staff retention, student attendance, academic engagement, and overall perceptions of safety. This significant economic and social impact underscores the critical need for proactive investments in school safety measures.

  • Roughly half of parents (51%) reported being either "extremely" or "very" concerned about the possibility of a violent intruder entering their child's school. (Pew Research Center)

  • More than twice as many crimes occur in suburban schools as in urban schools, but the average cost per victim is higher in urban areas. (RTI International)

  • Violence in and around schools can lead to lower grades, increased absenteeism, fewer friendships, and less trust in teachers. (Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma)

  • During the 2021-22 school year, U.S. public schools recorded approximately 857,500 violent incidents and 479,500 nonviolent incidents. Sixty-seven percent of schools reported at least one violent incident. (National Center for Education Statistics)

Investing in the safety of our schools directly safeguards the well-being of our students, ensuring an environment conducive to learning and growth. Preventing such significant financial losses and safeguarding the well-being of students underscores that the expense of investing in comprehensive school safety measures is a necessary and ultimately far less costly alternative.
